Family Ministry Retreat
Faith 24/7 – Living for Jesus
“Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. ” Deuteronomy 6:5-7
Barna Research Group has discovered that in a typical week, fewer than 10 percent of parents who regularly attend church with their kids read the Bible together, pray together (other than at mealtimes) or participate in an act of service as a family unit. Even fewer families - 1 out of every 20- have any type of worship experience together with their kids, other than while they are at church during a typical month.
Each year for the last four years the annual Family Ministry Retreat has sought to teach and inspire parents to disciple their children at home. This continues to be the goal of this annual retreat and this year’s focus will be on helping families live their faith 24/7 and understanding the God-given influence they have in the world around them. Families will have the opportunity to pray, read scripture, and worship together. There will be practical teaching, modeling, connecting with other families for encouragement and resources made available.
Will Mayer from St. Michael’s, in his own words, “The Holy Spirit is on the move, turning the hearts of fathers to their children and the hearts of children to their fathers. Faith begins at home – as it should – it is dictated in God’s word clearly. However, HOW do we do faith at home? I can say that there are many great resources out there, but there is one right here in our own backyard that not only instructs, but recharges. My family and I have attended Family Camp since 2009, and I can honestly say that it is the place where my family and I first learned - and continue to learn - the HOW. From the families we have met to the resources and teachings that we have received, it is a cornerstone to our overall family worship. In addition, the times that we have spent in this special part of the Lord’s creation at Camp Saint Christopher have deepened our togetherness as a family and have formed lasting memories and faith lessons that we can pass down through the generations. Truly, it is a vital piece that we strive to make a part of our yearly faith journey.
Families are invited to join us once again at beautiful St. Christopher Camp & Conference Center for fun and fellowship. Rates are all inclusive and cover three night’s lodging, all meals and all activities. There will be lots of beach time with fun activities like swimming, sailing, kayaking, hiking, wall climbing and more.
The Rev. Shay Gaillard, Rector of Church of the Good Shepherd in Charleston, along with his family, will be leading the retreat. Shay, his wife Tara and their four daughters have been intentional about praying together, having family devotions and doing family worship at home. They will share how they do it and why it is important to them.
